Once thought she would never fit in with her fellow schoolmates, Cassidy Campbell was elected Homecoming Queen of Marina High School. Cassidy becomes the first transgender student to be elected Homecoming Queen at her school. Cassidy was born a male, but has always felt she was meant to be a woman. She hopes this honor will become a victory for the ongoing struggle for LBGTQ rights and hopes one day to become a voice for the LBGTQ community. After her crowning, Cassidy said, " I was proud to win, not just for me but for everyone out there. I think it really shows the progression of the times." You are speaking about something that happened, as in, previously, as in, the past. So, 'became' is appropriate. 'Becomes' has an entirely different meaning.
