Day 0

It is opening day at E3 and everyone knows what’s happening. Two brand new consoles are going head to head vying for your money and attention for possibly the next ten years. Will racers prefer Need for Speed or Forza? Will shooters pick Battlefield or Call of Duty? Will adventure seekers pick Assassin’s Creed or Beyond: Two Souls? Everything starts here at E3 2013.

Xbox One VS PlayStation 4 Opening Day

Hardware

Xbox One opened the show throwing everything they had to alleviate the tensions of gamers, who feared the inability to play used games, always online, and an ever watching Kinect. While the used games situation was better explained, the rest of the questions were pushed aside for now with promises of existing free games and the promise that arcade games would carry over from 360 to Xbox One. With a price tag of $499.99 the behemoth laid the gauntlet down.

PlayStation kept secrets right up till the very opening of their show. With nothing to lose and everything to gain they proved that they still have big guns too. Promises that used games will always be playable, and the console does not have to be online were obvious shots at the Xbox. While the design of the actual PlayStation was unique the shape of a console doesn’t sell alone. What does sell is the same cheap price of online play and promise of more features to come and a $399.99 price tag.

                Games

Xbox 360 currently has had 738 games over its lifespan so far. While newer than Sony they have learned what sells and they make money by making successful titles bigger.  Starting with Metal Gear Solid 5 (a former PlayStation exclusive), adding World of Tanks (a former PC exclusive) and then showing off 13 other titles, including several exclusives, it’s clear to see why it’s still worth getting a Xbox One while keeping your Xbox 360. Many of their shows had live demos of the games themselves an impressive feat for a live show of this scale. One thing that should be noted is the reliance of the Microsoft Smart Glass, a Windows 8 tablet, something that the Wii U is still struggling with.

PlayStation 3 is a high powered console that loves to show off its abilities in HD. Continuing with this PlayStation 4 is absolutely visually stunning. The games that showed off for PlayStation were well prepared for this and came in HD and flashy colors. Huge titles such as Watch Dogs, Final Fantasy XV (Formerly 14 Versus) and Destiny had amazing shows with short live demos. However despite this, the majority of what PlayStation used to raise hype was cut scenes and games that may not be seen till early 2015 or exclusively for PlayStation 4

What should be noted from both consoles is what games are moving towards. In the PC world you rarely ever see a disc. Both consoles have said that from day one all games released will be available for download or purchase. What does this mean for game retailers such as GameStop? Probably not much, as majority of console gamers still prefer the feel of a box and disc.

It should also be noted the heavy use of a Massive Multiplayer Online style game. MMOs are another thing that has been long coming to the consoles and the PC world accepted them a long time ago. While majority of the downside to MMO’s will be missing on console (EX: Long wait for servers, costly monthly fees, and people willing to shell out actual money to be better than everyone else), some of the main downsides will be there too (EX: Trolls being actively in your game, Begging and scamming for money, and poor connection can make gameplay impossible)

Day 1-3: The Future of Games

It should be noted while there are no actual single shows at E3 each game was brought to a Gamespot Stage where they showed off, discussed, and were questioned about their game and while all the games deserve their own spot writing about the titles that you should know about is what I’m supposed to do.

Titan Fall was a surprise title brought out as an Xbox One exclusive. Featuring huge mechs befittingly called Titans this title uses large battlefields with fast pace movement and fighting to bring new life to a once dead “Mech†genre.

Watch Dogs had most of its premier during the PlayStation reveal. This game has had a lot of hype following it around for the past year. Now that it is here in playable demo format it had not disappointed. A very unique story, amazing gameplay, and drop in drop out multiplayer assistance make this game an amazing title.

Battlefields 4 chose an interesting approach to new. While graphically very similar to its predecessor gameplay was multiplied 10 fold. Using the newly powered systems consoles, DICE remade Battlefield in a huge way. Adding 64 player multiplayer, huge destructive environments, massive vehicle battles, and the reintroduction of commander support. Battlefield definitely raised the bar for shooting games at E3.

Beyond: Two Souls showed us a rather different side to the game this year. Last year Two Souls showed a trailer that featured a blank expression young woman. When they revealed it again this year they showed a human weapon fighting in a desert environment. Then we learn that this game will span 20 years of the main character’s life. This will be an amazing adventure game that will get you invested in the story.

Destiny is the revolution of Bungie. Proving that Halo was not just a fluke they have made a world so breath taking that most people still don’t know what to say. With stunning visuals in a futuristic setting it manages to keep some very core elements. Although they continue to keep many secrets about the game, people will be watching this game for updates right up till its launch date.

(More Titles Still Being added)

[Editor's note: I miss the MechAssault series.  It was an excellent mech series on the original xbox. It will be nice to see more mech games.]

Since you are given news out to the KSI Community. I think you should definitely add that the reason the Xbox cost 100$ more then the PS is because the Xbox comes with it's brand new kinect. While the PS4 you need to buy it seperatly for 100$ since it's not needed like the Xbox one.
